Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors of Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Study in Aguelhok

ABSTRACT

Hypertension doubles the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure (CHF), ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, renal failure, and peripheral arterial disease.1 Objectives of this study is to estimate hypertension prevalence and its risk factors in Aguelhok. A community based cross-sectional study was carried out among the people aged 20 to 99 years living in Aguelhok area. The prevalence of hypertension in the present study (31.11%). Occupation, smoking and obesity have strong correlation with hypertension in this study. Women develop hypertension predominantly around the age of menopause; men who develop hypertension at early age are predominantly systolic hypertension. Hypertensive cases were predominantly among married individual. Increasing age is proved to be an independent risk factor for hypertension.
